After a several year hiatus, The Erie County Fair will bring back the annual 5K on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 9am at The Fairgrounds in Hamburg, NY. Registration on the day of the event begins at 7:30am, but pre-registration is encouraged. The certified course is a 3.1 mile (sanctioned and previously certified) that begins at The Fairgrounds and takes a route through the Town and Village of Hamburg and returns back to finish on the track of The Fairgrounds.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Special Olympics of New York, an organization that is dedicated to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with their families, Special Olympics athletes and the community. Through their participation in Special Olympics New York athletes gain confidence and build a positive self-image, which carries into the classroom, the home, the workplace and the community.
Pre-registration cost is $20 and $25 on the day of the race which includes admission into the Fair, post race party and more. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 winners in each of 12 categories and for overall male and female finishes. You can register online here or download an application. All ages are welcome to participate in the 5K, but no pets, skateboards, rollerblades or bicycles are allowed on the course. Water stations will be provided.
